Most Eco-friendly Wooden Wall Shelf: BAMFOX Bamboo Floating Wall Shelf

Most Expensive Wooden Wall Floating Shelf: Sorbus Floating Shelf

The use of floating shelves is a growing trend in modern-contemporary home decor, and understandably so.

Their stylish/elegant design and sturdy structure make them a great addition to any home. Whether the intended purpose is style or storage, installing a few durable floating shelves around your space is certainly a wise choice.

If you’re looking for a place to hold collectibles, photos, decor, books, toys (that you want to keep out of the kids’ reach—way, way up), artwork, trophies, delicate kitchenware, small potted plants, figurines (and anything else for that matter; once small or light enough) without sucking up too much space, a floating shelf (or shelves) may be an ideal wall accessory to have installed around your home.

Before we get straight to the review, I think it best that I highlight some qualities you should look out for when getting a floating shelf; be it wooden, metal, or even glass floating shelves.

Qualities Of A Good Floating Shelf

There are several factors that may determine whether a product as delicate as a floating shelf is good or not. These are some of the basics, although not limited to, that you should consider:

  • Made from top quality material; whether lumber, plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), glass, or metal, choose a floating shelf that is of premium quality.
  • Not cheap, but also inexpensive. For many of us, we associate quality with price, so if a product is “too cheap” we may assume the same about the quality. Choose a shelf that is not as expensive (if you’re on a budget) but also performs just as well, if not better, than those in the pricier range.
  • A good floating shelf should be durable and has stable support (whether adhesives, wall anchors, studs, or visible brackets) —especially dependent on its purpose or intended use.

PRO TIP: Before hanging anything on your wall, or installing your floating shelf, make sure you find out what your wall is made of; whether drywall, plasterboard, or concrete. Knowing the type of wall you’re working with will help you to better determine the type of hardware needed for your project.

You may or may not need additional tools like a tape measure, handheld drill, screwdriver, or a stud finder (this one is optional. But if you don’t have one, and want to buy one so as to reduce the hassle, here’s the top-rated one on the market right now—that you can buy on Amazon for convenience).

  • Thickness and grade —the higher the grade, the higher the price; usually.
  • Looks authentic. This is specific to wooden floating shelves. You’ll want to choose a material that looks more like real wood. Plywood floating shelves are a good example of shelves that take on the wood-like appearance (not as smooth with a lot of grain for higher grades) better than those made from MDF (smooth, with no grain).

That is not to say that MDF shelves are of poor quality.

If you are not too “dead set” on having your shelves look like real wood, then a shelf made from Medium-density fiberboard is a less expensive option.

  • Blends well with any decor. If you’re working with a set theme, just like you would your furniture, choose a floating shelf that complements your theme. This is particularly crucial if your shelf primarily serves decorative purposes.
  • Whether it’s suitable for outdoor use or for areas that tend to attract MOISTURE, for example, the bathroom. Some materials tend to soak up the water quite easily which may cause them to warp and swell. One such example is MDF (more suitable for indoor or decorative use. Avoid use in rooms with moisture, as well —yes, your bathroom and kitchen). If you’re working on an outdoor project, make sure you check if the material can withstand such conditions.
  • Usually come in packs of two or three: More value for your money!
  • Vary in size: So may be suitable for any room or awkward empty wall space.
  • If you’re planning on doing DIY floating shelves, then you may want to consider the finishing; whether you plan to paint or stain the finished product, and how well the material takes to paint or stain. I know that plywood (and other hardwood) is said to work better with stain, while, for painting, the smoother, less grainy surface of MDF holds the paint better.

PRO TIP: Always start with a coat of oil-based primer for a better finish; nevertheless.

So, keeping those points in mind, here are 5 of the best wood floating shelves available on Amazon.

*This list is in no particular order, and the grading is subjective.

#1:  BAYKA Floating Shelves

This type of shelving is stylish, sturdy, and easy to fit (with just a few screws).

The metal brackets give it added support for holding heavier items such as books, trinkets, and other decors.

The BAYKA floating shelf also comes in sets of threes with the sizes ranging from small, to medium, and large.

The fact that it is made from Paulownia wood (natural wood) is also a plus.

This wall shelving unit easily passes as one of the best buys.

What’s Included in the package:

✔3 × Paulownia wood boards

✔6 × triangular metal brackets (3* left brackets, 3* right brackets)

✔20 × big screws

✔20 × drywall anchors

✔20 × small screws

✔1 × instruction manual

#2: MELANNCO Floating Wall Mount Square Cube Shelves

If you had no idea what the best cube floating shelves were; now you do!

The Melannco floating shelves come in sets of three and are equally chic and lightweight.

You have 4 colors to choose from: black, espresso (coffee!), white, and gray —which make it easier for you to match your decor.

These shelves are relatively easy to install and super affordable! The perfect choice for adding a stylish touch to any space: from your living room to your bedroom.

While those are qualities you could, will, and must love, there are also cons to every product.

Depending on what you intend to use it for, a major disadvantage of the Melannco square cube shelf may be the fact that it is not as sturdy as you’d probably want a shelf to be.

This is important to bear in mind; especially if you are planning to store fragile objects (picture frames, vases, figurines, glassware et cetera) on the shelf. Every shelf has its storage capacity, so once you comply with that, you should be OK.

The size is another possible negative. These shelves tend to be small, so if you were planning to store large items, they may not be the right choice for you. They are so small that they may be too small for most books, even; except for very small paperback. I’d say it’s best to use these as decorative floating wall shelves; they (with their interlocking square design) are pretty enough to stand on their own.

What You’ll Get With Your Purchase:

—Hanging template

— A small level

— Mounting hardware

#3: BAMFOX Floating Shelves

These shelves are great if you’re looking for some little shelves to put a few collectibles, photos, family mementos, and other little trinkets and things on

Get those items off the counters and onto these stunning, sturdy, stylish shelves.

The Bamfox floating shelf unit is easy to fit and is primarily made of bamboo with wire backing that gives off an eco-friendly yet eyecatching design that is also super durable!

This bamboo wall shelf would be an excellent choice for environmentalists!

It comes in a set of two and is paired with brackets, boards, and screws (to make the task of fitting everything together a bit easier).

The Bamfox wall mounted floating shelves are available in different sizes so they’re versatile enough to suit any space (yes, even that awkward wall you don’t have a clue what to do with)—plus, you’ll instantly appreciate the rustic charm it lends to your space.

Work well in any industrial, farmhouse-style, or even modern spaces.

The most blatant con is that it only comes in one color, but if you’re cool with that, then this may not be so bad.

If you are looking for a stylish bamboo shelf with more pieces, this one is said to be the best bamboo floating shelf (and without the brackets).

#4: Soduku Floating Shelf

Check The Reviews

If you’ve been looking around for simple bathroom shelves (especially to hang above your toilet or beside your sink) then this shelf right here may be what you’ve been looking for.

If you want a place to store your lotions, perfumes, and other toiletries without taking up valuable counter space, dresser space, or stashing them tackily beneath the sink, then this particular shelf may solve your problem.

The extra protective guard at the front of each shelf will stop whatever you put on your shelves from falling; which is great (especially if you’re as clumsy as I am).

Perfect size

Modern, sleek, sturdy

These have been tagged, by Amazon, as the best floating shelves for the bathroom. So, if you’ve been looking to renovate your bathroom and you were hoping to install a few shelves, then this shelving unit may be your pick.

Since the design of these shelves easily matches any decor, they can be great for use in kitchens, closets, bathrooms, offices, or even living & dining rooms.

— Made of pinewood and said to be damp-proof and heat-resistant

— Available in 4 colors for you to choose from.

— The towel rail on the shelves may certainly come in handy. If you don’t think the rail is necessary, though, the good thing is that it can be removed!

What you’ll get with your purchase:

— Two shelves

— A towel hanger

— Four fixed expansion screws & 4 fixed screws

You may have to replace the flimsy anchor bolts they come with, but that shouldn’t be too much of a bother to buy them separately if needed. Here are some really good screws that are fit for even drywall.

Also, the finish may not be as bright as some may like but a layer of poly may solve that issue. Add a coat of Polyurethane in case the topcoat is too dull for your liking.

#5: Sorbus Floating Shelf

With no visible brackets, this floating shelf truly gives the illusion that it is floating mid-air.

It has a beautiful matte finish and comes available in black, and white.

Like the Soduku and Bamfox models, this brand floating shelf also comes in a set of two.

The attached metal brackets it comes with allow for easy hanging so you can quickly fill any empty wall space around the home; whether it’s an empty wall space above a desk, fireplace, entryway, bedroom, bathroom, between windows, in your kitchen, and more.

Use these to showcase trophies, accolades, family photos, hold spices and jars, hair and beauty products, candles, and any other small items that may otherwise take up too much ground space.

These square-shaped display shelves may be hung alone or as a pair. You can also play around with their placement to suit your style and design: staggered for more aesthetic interest or mounted side-by-side for a cleaner, more streamlined effect.

— More expensive of all the other floating shelves mentioned on this list.

— Made of faux wood material.

If none of the floating wooden shelves on the list caught your attention, that’s OK.

There’s no wrong or right answer—it all boils down to taste and preference.
